Topic:  kkaarrlls, the experimental university platform

kkaarrlls is the name of an edition that was launched in 2009 during the Salone del Mobile and is been presented every year since then. All of the contributions are works that have been created in recent years as part of the coursework at the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design. As much as these very diverse pieces of furniture, lamps, and accessories differ in their design, production, size, and consequently also price, they all primarily have in common their basis in an entirely and extremely unconventional design approach. However, the ideas for this approach are neither found without reflection, nor are they arbitrary; instead, in all examples presented here, these ideas stem from an absolutely unprejudiced view of the world of objects and its coherence. This does not mean that the solutions proposed are absolutely new; but rather, that the main features, like construction, configuration or materials, are consistently different which results in a new understanding of the respective product and its original function. To this end, this edition is not conceived as a seasonal trend, but rather understands itself as a fundamental contribution to the current discussion in design. The contribution is fundamental in that the designs presented are not only different in the way they are presented, but that they are also created by designers who, as a result of their vita, think differently, act differently, and to some extent also live differently. After all, they are part of a generation which, in a few years, will do key work on the central questions regarding the shaping of the future. All objects are limited editions. Regardless of whether the respective designs may be later produced in series, the models presented here have all been developed and designed especially for kkaarrlls.
